Helen Wills's own impression. Printed by the artist, signed with his cipher in pencil and inscribed, To Helen Wills from Childe Hassam / 2nd state of plate. A fine impression on wove watermarked Van Gelder with full margins and with the artist's characteristic tack-holes around the edges on all sides. Generally in excellent condition.
Hassam made several studies of Helen Wills but like so many of his etchings, they must have been printed in very small numbers as they are rarely seen today. They appear to have been fairly close friends and Wills was also an amateur artist and printmaker so it is possible to speculate that their meetings at Easthampton in 1928 included lessons in the art of etching.
Helen Wills (1905-98) was one of the greatest American tennis players in the history of the game. Little Miss Poker Face, as she became known because of her sheer determination and serious expression, won thirty-one Grand Slam titles between 1923 and 1938 and an Olympic gold medal in France in 1924. She won the Wimbledon singles title eight times, a record which stood for fifty-two years.
Provenance: From the collection of Helen Wills

A superb, strong impression printed by Delâtre in dark brown ink with surface tone on off-white laid paper. From the first issue in Huit gravures à l'eau forte par Manet announced by Cadart et Chevalier in September 1862, a year before Manet's own publication of the plate and before the addition of the aquatint in the final state. Minor handling defects and a trace of an old fold but really in remarkably fresh unmolested condition. Extremely scarce in this early issue.

With the address of Delâtre. A superb delicately inked proof on chine volant with narrow margins, almost certainly from the series of fourteen plates, Eaux-fortes par Edouard Manet, published privately by the artist in 1863 in what is believed to be an edition of only twenty-eight. Extremely rare in such a fine early impression. The sheet with minor defects, old hinges etc. but generally in excellent condition.
Jay Fisher in his excellent and most informative catalogue of the exhibition of Manet's prints organized and circulated by the International Exhibitions Foundation in 1985 and 1986 states that no set of the fourteen etchings has survived intact. He further points out that the finest impressions of Manet's prints are either from this set or are proofs printed on a similar chine volant which gave the delicate effects that Manet sought. He condemns much of the commercial printing of Manet's plates as heavy and over-inked. |

| With the early imprint of Cadart & Chevalier. A superb impression printed on tinted chine collé, as published by Cadart for the Société des Aquafortistes in the first end of year compilation of the series Eaux-Fortes Modernes, 1863. The series which so far consisted of sixty plates had been published in parts from September 1862 until August 1863 but was now available as a complete entity. Minor signs of ageing in the full margins but really a near-perfect example in untouched original condition. |
