Etching c.1862 320x240mm

| Delteil 5 state ii/iv |

| With the early imprint of Cadart & Chevalier. A superb impression printed on tinted chine collé, as published by Cadart for the Société des Aquafortistes in the first end of year compilation of the series Eaux-Fortes Modernes, 1863. The series which so far consisted of sixty plates had been published in parts from September 1862 until August 1863 but was now available as a complete entity. Minor signs of ageing in the full margins but really a near-perfect example in untouched original condition. |

Woodcut - Black Figure 1909-10 240x117mm
[278x209mm] |
 |
| Ref: Newman 8 state i/ii |
 |
Extremely rare - one of only four proofs in the first state before the lower tips of the block were accidentally broken off. Designed and presumably cut in Florence in 1909, this remarkable proof, one of the earliest taken, was hand-printed by the artist in Moscow in 1910 and sent home to his family in a letter. Signed, dated and inscribed Moscow in ink. In untouched original condition but with folds and other minor defects.
Having agreed to produce Hamlet for Constantin Stanislavsky at the Moscow Art Theatre, Craig worked in Russia periodically from 1908 until the production premiered on 8 January 1912. He spent much of the winter and spring in the city in 1910. His work involved not only the designs for the settings and costumes but also the direction of the play itself. Hamlet and Daemon is unquestionably one of Craig's finest prints.
Provenance: Edward Craig, the artist's son. |

Woodcut c.1910 320x402mm
[459x569mm] |
 |
|
 |
A fine though slightly uneven hand-printed impression on Chine volant, typical of the first issue. Signed by the artist in pencil and numbered from the edition of 100. The sheet with minor defects in the margins but generally superb.
One of a series of four large Fauvist woodcuts which Dufy exhibited at the Salon d' Automne in 1910 and clearly related to his magnificent woodcut illustrations for Apollinaire's Le Bestiaire published the following year. Early signed examples such as this are extremely scarce, perhaps because of the fragile nature of the paper on which they are printed. |
