Engraved by Welby Sherman after a design by Edward Calvert
A fine impression of this scarce print from the only edition of 30 issued by Carfax and Co., Ltd., London in 1904

Calvert designed two versions of this subject, the first of which he engraved himself. The only known impression is in the British Museum. Lifetime impressions of the present engraving can be seen in the V&A and the British Museum.

Apart from Welby Sherman's involvement with 'The Ancients' little is known of his life or work. He appears to have made only five engravings, two after Palmer, the one here after Calvert, one possibly after Richmond and a mezzotint in the manner of John Martin.
