Cliché-verre1862288x227mm (borderline)[sheet 298x237mm]
Reference: Delteil 27; Melot 27
A fine, early lifetime example of this rare cliché-verre, one of only two made by the artist. Printed on thin salted paper, probably with the assistance of Eugène Cuvelier who had first encouraged Millet to draw on the prepared glass plates at Barbizon. The plate for this cliché-verre survived and was finally reprinted by Maurice Le Garrec in 1921. It is now in the Louvre. Early impressions are extremely scarce.
Provenance: From the collection of Hector Giacomelli (1822-1904), his red stamp lower right recto [Lugt 1311], cited by Delteil.
